Provincial or Private Campgrounds?
A question that we hear often is ‘are provincial campgrounds better than a private RV campground?’ There are many opinions on this, and we don’t tend to prefer one over the other as they both offer different experiences, and each has its own pro’s and con’s.
Private Campgrounds
Private campgrounds are owned and managed by private individuals or companies. Many private campgrounds provide larger camp sites for various RV types and many full service hookup sites.
Fees can vary from inexpensive to very expensive depending on the amenities and services available. Many privately owned campgrounds provide an experience much like a full-sized resort, including landscaped gardens, restaurants, amusements, pools, spas, and clubhouses. Some have beach areas with associated facilities, and many provide organized activities for kids, such as crafts, sports, and other entertainment. Together with fully stocked stores and pools mean that private campgrounds can provide a complete, relaxing vacation for the whole family.
Provincial Campgrounds
Provincial campground are generally set in provincial park areas, so you can experience nature in its purest form. Sites will have hiking trails, lakes, rivers, and beaches, varied terrain, and a wealth of nature to explore. Campsites tend to be well treed, spacious, private, family-friendly, and relatively inexpensive. But it can be difficult to reserve provincial park sites during high season, on long weekends, or on statutory holidays. The best way is to plan ahead and reserve a site online well in advance. Also note that the facilities and services provided at a provincial park may not be of the quality and availability that’s on offer at a private campground.
So Which Type of Campground Should I Choose?
Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference. Some prefer the natural beauty and views you can only find at a provincial park. Others, like the resort-like experience of a private campground. When you’re out camping, you can experience both and enjoy each for it’s own merits!
